MFT Admission Requirements

Application materials should be requested from:
The Graduate School
University of New Hampshire
109 Thompson Hall
Durham New Hampshire
03824-3547

Applicants must submit two official transcripts from each college/university attended. Applicants are expected to have an undergraduate grade-point average equivalent to 3.0 on a 4-point system.

Applicants must submit three letters of recommendation. These letters should address particular strengths that the applicant will bring to the program and should evaluate the applicant's potential as a marriage and family therapist.

The applicant is responsible for submitting the completed application forms, fee, recommendations, and transcripts in one package and sending the entire package to the Graduate School. Please note that submitting a complete application package significantly reduces processing time.

The applicant should arrange to have recent scores from the Graduate Record Examination General Test sent directly to the Graduate School by the testing service. Applicants are expected to have a combined score of at least 1500 on the GRE Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical components.

In addition to the complete package that is submitted to the Graduate School, the applicant must send written responses to the following questions directly to the Graduate Program Coordinator, Department of Family Studies, Pettee Hall, 55 College Road, Durham, NH, 03824.

Marriage and Family Therapy Questions

  1. Identify what you feel are the essential characteristics of a functional family.
  2. Describe the reasons why you are interested in becoming a marriage and family therapist.
  3. What do you think are the major challenges faced by contemporary marriage and family therapists?
  4. What are your professional goals?
  5. Identify your personal characteristics, skills, and experiences that will facilitate your success in achieving your professional goals.
  6. Please note that the applicant's response to these questions is meant to supplement the Personal Statement required on the graduate application, not to duplicate it.

Applications must be submitted to the graduate school by February 15th, as the department will begin reviewing applications on that date.

Applicants who are considered for admission will be invited to interview by the admissions committee. A personal interview is required, although a conference call may be acceptable under unusual circumstances. In either event, all expenses will be the responsibility of the applicant.

NE Regional Student Program
