experiential/Outdoor Education Ph.D. Program

Course of Study

Students in the Experiential/Outdoor Education specialization take the courses required for all Education doctoral students. These courses include:

 

  1. EDUC 902 - Proseminar in Doctoral Studies
  2. EDUC 905 - Critical Inquiry in Education (prerequisite for EDUC 903)
  3. EDUC 903 - Normative Inquiry in Education
  4. EDUC 904 - Qualitative Inquiry in Education
  5. EDUC 981 - Methods and Techniques of Education Research

 

In addition, students are required to take 24 credits of intensive coursework in experiential learning or outdoor education. Examples include:

 

  1. KIN 884 - Programs in Outdoor Education
  2. KIN 885 - Foundations of Adventure Education
  3. KIN 922 - Change Processes in Adventure Programming
  4. KIN 986 - Outdoor Education Seminar

 

Students may request to have up to three(3) graduate courses (up to 12 credits), taken at UNH or UNH Manchester before their matriculation into the program, applied to their program. Students may request to transfer two graduate courses (up to eight credits) from another institution to their doctoral program at UNH. At a maximum, the UNH Graduate School allows a student to have three courses (up to 12 credits) applied to her/his doctoral program from coursework before matriculation.


Current student and faculty research includes the following areas:

 

  1. The effects of adventure orientation programs on incoming and continuing students at university settings
  2. Student motivation in experiential education programs
  3. Building a tradition of evidence-based research and practice in experiential education
  4. Sociocultural foundations of experiential learning
  5. Integrating experiential learning in K-12 classrooms
  6. Implementing adventure education in urban middle school classrooms
  7. Diversity and experiential education
  8. Social development of early adolescents in adventure programs
