Applying to the University

Teaching Certification

Teaching certification in physical education, (K-grade 12) can be obtained through either our four-year undergraduate program or through the Department of Education's fifth-year program. Those who choose the fourth-year option must have a GPA of at least 2.67 to be accepted into the culminating pedagogy experience of student teaching for 16 weeks in an elementary, and a middle or high school setting.

Students who choose the fifth-year option will first obtain a Bachelor's Degree in Kinesiology (without student teaching and certification) and then enroll in the Master's of Art in Teaching program through the Education Department at UNH. All fifth-year candidates must meet the requirements for admission to graduate school (e.g., grade-point average of 2.87 or above and a good score on the Graduate Record Examination). Students in the Master’s degree program have the option of being certified in physical education (K-grade 12) only or receiving dual certification in physical education and health (K-grade12). Master’s degree students will be placed in a full year internship in local schools at both the elementary and middle or high school levels.
