Clinical Experience Through Transition 719 by Georgia Drew
Attention fellow associate degree nurses interested in achieving your Bachelors Degree in Nursing ! Think it is impossible to achieve working full time with a family? Well, I am proof it can be done! I am just finishing up with my Bachelors Degree in Nursing from UNH at Manchester. I have worked full time at Concord Hospital during the day and have taken classes at night or weekends. I did just one class a semester. Yes, it took a while to chip away at the class requirements, but once you start, you'll be surprised at how fast it all comes to an end. This is why I would like to explain the last class requirement that's called Transition 719.
In transition the student is required to do 120 hours of clinical. This sounds like a lot of time, but it goes by very fast depending on how you choose to set up your time frame with the clinical area of choice. That's the key making the right choice. In transition you choose where you would like to do your clinical, whether it is in a hospital, clinic setting, and Dr's office, ICU, CCU, Neonatal unit, ER, OR, PACU, or the State House following a Nurse lobbyist. You decide where your time will be spent. 719 opens doors for you to try a nursing experience you might have only dreamed about. Or wished you could experience for a short time. It's called the opportunity to get out of your box and explore the nursing world around you that you did not even know existed. For example you could do Arrow Nursing on an Indian Reservation. This program allows you to travel or to explore nursing in another country. The possibilities are endless.
My clinical experience has been with the State Public Health Department in the Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Surveillance Bureau. This opportunity arose for me because I had such a good Community Nursing clinical experience, I chose disease surveillance in Public Health. STD Surveillance is an area of data collection and analysis, and interpretation.
The process of completing case reports allows data collectors to describe disease trends and occurrences for the Public Health Department.
The staff at the State Health Department practices strict Confidentiality Standards. All data is handle in a manner consistent with these Standards. It was very interesting learning to put case reports together and to form an analysis of what was going on around the state of NH. In addition, education and prevention plays an important role in this program. Identifying populations at risk for STDs allows prevention programs to target their resources appropriately.
This has made for a very interesting clinical experience for me, because in my job I am an Operating Room Nurse, and transition has allowed me a clinical experience in which I think outside of the box.
