Eta Iota Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau
Our Chapter
On April 15, 1984, The Eta Iota Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International was chartered at the University of New Hampshire with 110 members inducted. Since the chartering The Chapter has inducted over 600 members.
In keeping with the mission of Sigma Theta Tau International, the vision for Eta Iota Chapter is to be recognized as a center for fostering nursing excellence through research, professional development, mentoring, and community and global partnerships in order to influence health outcomes.
Awards are given annually in the form of grants for research and community service to deserving members. We were pleased to have honored 2 deserving members with research support. The undergraduate student honored was Lindsay Martel whose research titled: "The Challenges and Rewards of Working as a Direct Care Provider in the United States and Guatemala" was presented at the annual Mary Louise Fernald Symposium on May 2. The graduate student recipient was Sheri Cosme a 2004 graduate of the University of New Hampshire and currently a Master's student at the University of Hartford. Sheri was funded for her research focusing on nursing students and gave the keynote address at the Mary Louise Fernald Symposium titled "Baccalaureate Nursing Students Perceptions of Perioperative Nursing."
With the mission of Sigma Theta Tau focused on evidenced based practice a third award was instituted this year. This award was created to recognize research being conducted in the community and focusing on improving nursing practice through evidenced based practice. At our March 26 dinner and discussion held at UNH invited speakers from Seacoast Area hospitals presented some of the exciting work being done by community members. The night culminated with the awarding of research funds to Dr. Susanne Tracy to continue her translation research designed to measure the effectiveness of complementary therapies for controlling pain. Dr. Tracy will present her findings at the next dinner and discussion to be held in the fall of 2007.
Eta Iota Chapter of SIgma Theta Tau recognizes . At our annual 2006 Fall induction the largest group of student and community members of over 40 strong were inducted. The chapter endeavors to build a membership of outstanding nurses who represent the best in nursing leadership, scholastic achivement and research."
