Please join the students and faculty in the Social Work Department’s 5th Annual Celebration honoring National Mental Illness Awareness Week. We are hosting a number of events that are free and open to the university community. Also, stop by Dimond Library and check out the book display on mental illness. What is Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW)?
MIAW is an annual observance sponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness to focus attention on the high incidence of mental illness in America. The purpose of the observance is to educate the public and reduce the stigma that surrounds mental illness.
Sunday, October 4, 2009 - 7th Annual NAMI-NH Walk for Recovery from Mental Illness. Join Team UNH!
The Walk begins and ends at NH Hospital (soccer fields on South Fruit St), Concord. Festivities and registration begins at 9:30 am; Walk begins at 10:30 am. You can join the UNH team and/or contribute financially by going to the walk website (www.nami.org/namiwalks09/NHP/unhsocialwork).
Monday - Thursday, October 5 – 8th Information Table.
Social Work students will be providing information/brochures from the National Alliance on Mental Illness regarding mental illness and resources. Location: MUB second floor (outside food court). Hours: 11:30 am - 1:00 pm.
Wednesday, October 7, 2009 (6:30 - 8:30 pm) - Panel Presentation.
A presentation on topics surrounding mental illness in MUB Theater II includes a panel presentation by the Rochester, NH Mental Health Court with the Honorable Judge Dan Cappiello, Thomas Velardi, Strafford County Attorney, Alex Roth, Public Defender, Captain Paul Callaghan, Rochester Police Department, Carrie Lover, Strafford County Criminal Justice Program Coordinator, Frank Laratonda, Mental Health Court Director and Blair Rowlett, Senior Mental Health Case Manager. Also joining the panel is David Cross, Ph.D., Director of the UNH Counseling Center; and David Andre, NAMI NH In Our Own Voice. Click here to view photos from this event.
